Tooth decay is one of the most common dental problems and occurs when acids in your mouth end up dissolving the outer layers of the teeth. An estimated 33% of adults and over 25% of children in Western countries suffer from tooth decay. As you might expect, this figure is much higher in developing nations.
The symptoms of tooth decay include tooth sensitivity, toothache, bad breath, black spots on your teeth and an unpleasant taste in your mouth. If you don’t treat tooth decay, further issues such as gum disease, dental abscesses and cavities can lead to more pain and a large dental bill.
A Simple Solution
You could continue to allow the specter of tooth decay to hang over you or else you can solve the problem in as little as 4 minutes a day. All you need to do is brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each time. Always brush your teeth before you go to bed; the other occasion doesn’t necessarily need to be first thing in the morning.
You should not brush your teeth straight after a meal because it can actually damage your teeth; this is especially the case if you’ve had wine, fizzy drinks, fruit or any acidic food. Don’t brush for an hour after meals as this gives your saliva time to neutralize the acid. Add in an extra couple a minutes a day for mouthwash and flossing and you should have the ideal oral hygiene regime. Obviously, reducing sugar intake and consumption of acidic foods will also help.
