Having your braces removed is one of the procedures you can have done at PMDC Dental. Once they are gone, it is likely that you will have to wear a retainer to ensure that your teeth stay properly aligned. Wearing a retainer isn't quite as demanding as wearing braces, but there are still a few things you may want to know about wearing one.
The one thing you should do right away is get into the habit of wearing your retainer. With your braces gone, it could be all too easy to enjoy no longer having something constantly on your teeth, which could result in you forgetting to wear your retainer. Wear it for most of the day when you first get it, only taking it out to eat and brush. After a few months, you can wear it less, but keep in the habit of wearing it at night for at least three to five times a week. Of course, it is entirely up to you how long you end up wearing it. Having said that, you may end up needing to wear it for the rest of your life in order to prevent your teeth from shifting and becoming misaligned again, which is why you want to stay in the habit of wearing it as much as possible.
You are going to need to clean your retainers, too, as they can gather grime and other substances that are harmful to your teeth and mouth over time. To clean your retainer, you'll want to get a separate toothbrush from the one you use to brush, along with some liquid soap. Rinse the toothbrush in lukewarm water, then add the liquid soap, and use the brush to scrub the soap along the retainer, making sure to brush everywhere on the retainer to give it a thorough cleaning. Once your retainer is fully clean, rinse it with lukewarm water to remove all the soap. You will want to repeat this process at least once a day for as long as you wear your retainer to ensure that it is always clean when you wear it.
