Obviously, you need to visit your dentist for regular check-ups but you can greatly decrease your problems with tooth decay by following these simple tips.
Brushing
Contrary to popular opinion, you don’t necessarily HAVE to brush in the morning but you MUST brush before going to bed. You can brush at any other time during the day (to make up your two a day) but the morning is usually chosen more for convenience than efficacy.
Brush for a total of two minutes and make sure you spend equal time in each quadrant. Avoid brushing immediately after a meal because this can cause damage to your teeth; this is especially the case if you’ve had wine, fruit, fizzy drinks or any other food that contains acid.
Flossing
This removes plaque and food particles lodged between your teeth and beneath the gum line. Flossing is especially important because it can clean places your brush can’t reach. Floss at least once a day, preferably before or after brushing your teeth at night. You should also look to floss after meals to remove food that has become trapped in the gaps between your teeth.
Mouthwash
Choose an alcohol-free mouthwash that contains fluoride. It should not be used directly after brushing and it is probably best to use mouthwash at some point during the day. Once you have used the mouthwash, don’t eat or drink anything for 30 minutes.
Diet
Reduce the amount of sugar you eat and drink each day. Cutting down on the number of processed foods you eat daily should go some way towards achieving this goal. Look for healthier alternatives such as fruit and vegetables and look for artificial sweeteners that don’t damage your teeth.
You can prevent or at least reduce tooth decay through the adoption of a few simple protocols so follow the above advice and benefit from cleaner and healthier teeth.
