Having porcelain veneers put on to help with damaged teeth is one of the procedures that you can have done at PMDC Dental. Before having them placed on your teeth, however, there are some facts you will want to know about them to help you decide if porcelain veneers are the right choice for you.
There are a number of things that porcelain veneers can be used to treat. Some of them include discolored teeth, teeth that have been chipped, teeth that have been broken, teeth that are misaligned, and helping to close gaps that may be between teeth. Their color can be adjusted to match the color of your teeth, making them less visible.
In terms of having porcelain veneers put on your teeth, it will, unfortunately, likely require the removal of some healthy enamel from your tooth. It is usually around ½ millimeter of enamel that is removed in preparation for having the veneer placed. In addition, the dentist will likely place the veneer on your tooth temporarily to see how it fits before permanently placing it on your tooth. You should know that, because enamel is removed, the process is not reversible, so you should be sure about getting veneers before having them put on. Of course, if your tooth is in such a state of decay that veneers are your only option other than losing the tooth, then you might just have to accept it.
Once the veneers are in place, they should generally last between five and ten years. The dentist will check up on them on a regular basis and determine when you will need any new veneers. If you need new ones, they will need to be replaced entirely. It is possible that you may need to replace veneers sooner if they become damaged in some way, as they are typically not repairable. Eating hard foods on a regular basis and grinding your teeth can increase the chances of veneers being damaged, so if you either eat hard foods or grind your teeth (or both) on a regular basis, you will want to consider getting out of those habits.
